Happy Thursday, Panthers! WIth this being a short week, we only have Monday through Thursday for our KICs. As we get some rest and recuperation, here are this week’s KICs. Starting off with Trump continuing the idea of buying Greenland, Khalil’s arrest revealing issues with the deportation system, Goodwill setting up a mobile career center in Jasper, and Trump threatening a 200% tariff.
World – Trump continues pursuit of Greenland
This Tuesday, Greenland will vote for a new parliament, and this election could change relations with the US. The political parties of Greenland have very different viewpoints on the future of Greenland.
Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark during his first presidency. Denmark rejected his offer of buying Greenland and the idea seemed to just die. But in his second term, President Trump is more determined to annex Greenland in some type of way.
The reason President Trump wants to annex Greenland is because of its resources and its strategic location. Greenland’s position along the arctic shipping lanes, which are starting to open because the planet is starting to warm up, has attracted major superpowers, including China, Russia, the United States, and other European nations.
National – Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest shows legal issues in deportation system
Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil was arrested March 8 by federal immigration agents. His arrest has brought questions regarding the issues of gaining citizenship.
Khalil was a green card holder due to being married to an American citizen. He was detained in support of Donald Trump’s executive orders to prohibit antisemitism, alleging that Khalil is a member of Hamas. This claim was made without proof of evidence to support the allegations.
Federal judges will hold Khalil in the U.S as he awaits trial. As of right now, his legal team has not made a statement.
State – Georgia Goodwill sets up mobile career center
A Goodwill in north Georgia has set up its first mobile career center. The center will be opened along with their 70th retail store located in Jasper, Georgia.
The goal of the center is to bring job training and employment services to local communities. Because the center is mobile, it will be toured around at seven different locations throughout Georgia. The center plans to help 400 job-seekers and employ 125 people by the end of September.
The center will be having a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 19 from 9 a.m to 11 a.m. The center is located at the Goodwill Decatur Support Center on Lawrenceville Highway.
Politics – Trump responds to tariff battle with 200% threat
As a response to the European Union’s 50% tariff on U.S. whiskey, President Donald Trump threatened a 200% tariff on all alcohol from the European Union. This has escalated tensions between the long-time trading partners.
With the increased tension, President Trump has increased his rhetoric toward the European Union. He claims that they are one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the world. If the tariff is not removed immediately, President Trump will place the 200% tariff.
The tariff would go on all wines, champagnes, and alcohol products that come out of countries protected by the European Union, the main one being France. President Trump believes that this will be great for the wine and champagne business in the U.S.
