The varsity girls soccer team had their teacher appreciation night against Decatur High School on Tuesday. They pulled through with the win and remain the top seed in the region.
Junior captain Kendra Ivaska scored two goals. Senior captain Olivia Shaw and sophomore Alexis King scored the other two in their 4-1 win.
“I often have to miss class because of games, but my teachers are supportive of making sure I have the work and any help I may need,” junior captain Regan Wiley said. “They want us to do well and work with us to make sure we have success in both our academic and athletic lives.”
Most of the athletic programs at Starr’s Mill have a teacher appreciation night. It is a recognition ceremony that allows athletes to show their gratitude toward their chosen teacher.
A teacher could be chosen for an assortment of qualities. Some may include the way they form their classroom environment, the material that is being taught, and their teaching style.
There may be a tough balance between academic and athletics lives. Some players might recognize their teachers that try to put an ease on that obstacle. This night allows the student athletes at Starr’s Mill to show their acknowledgement and thankfulness that is owed back.
“We always put academics first, but respect our time together,” head coach John Bowen said. “Our players have been phenomenal about balancing the demands of academics and athletics to great success in both.”
The team is still first in the region with a 9-5 overall record and 6-0 in region play.
“Everyday we’re working towards playoffs. Every practice and game is in preparation to give our best showing,” Wiley said. “We try to remind ourselves everyday what our end goal is.”
Both soccer teams will host other celebratory nights further into the season. Senior night is on April 15 and the Battle for the Troops game against McIntosh is on April 18.
